Krittivaseshvara
About
The main place of Krittivaseshwar is in the Ekambar area, but despite having a symbolic form there, Krittivaseshwar has a high place in the main Shivling. His glory remained till the 17th century AD even after the temple was broken several times. His temple was also beautiful and luxurious. For this reason, Aurangzeb got the Alamgiri mosque built in its place. In Varanasi, he built mosques at only three places – Vishweshwar, Krittivaseshwar, Bindumadhav because these three places were very famous and popular at that time. Aurangzeb demolished the temple in 1659 and built the Alamgir mosque. To the east of the temple was attached Hanstirtha. In this complex, there was a place of half mosque and half temple, which had a fountain in the pit, at the same place Hindus used to worship. At present, the devotees started worshiping together by installing a big Shivling in that pit, but the mosque is still there at the remaining half of the place. Earlier there used to be public darshan once a year on Mahashivratri, but now you can go and worship everyday. Many people are not aware of this.
