The mythology of this linga is also proved by the fact that this linga is situated underground, about 20 feet below the ground. This linga named Amareshwar is the linga that gives liberation, because Ganga Sagar pilgrimage is also said to be the pilgrimage that gives liberation. There is a description in the scriptures that Gangasagar is the place where the river Ganga meets the ocean. There is a mythological saying that due to the curse of Kapil Muni, 60 thousand sons of King Sagar had died immediately at this place. For their salvation, King Bhagirath of King Sagar's dynasty brought Ganga to earth and Ganga met Sagar here. It is said that taking a dip in the ocean of the Ganges gives the same results as performing 10 Ashwamedha Yajnas and donating one thousand cows.
