The city of Varanasi is known by the name of this temple. The Kashi Vishwanath temple is one of the most famous temples of this city and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It was destroyed by Qutab-ud-din-Aibak in 1194 AD and was rebuilt by Ahilya Devi Holkar in the 18th century. No one till today knows who built this temple originally but it is one of the 12 jyotirlingas in the country. An interesting fact about this temple is that it features a gold dome and a gold spire on top. Legend has it, that if you make a wish after seeing the dome, Lord Shiva fulfills your wish.
