About
Shiva as Rameshvara is the patron deity of the huge temple complex. According to ancient mythology when Lord Rama was going to attack on Lanka at the bank of Indian Ocean, he made a lingam of sand and worshipped Shiva. The oral tradition refers that the Rameshvara is a form of lingam established by Lord Rama to get relief from the sins he accumulated after killing the Brahmin demon Ravana. it is believed that when Lord Rama, together with his brothers performed the Panchkroshi Yatra each one had installed lingams. The Rameshvara temple is believed to be the replica of the original one that lies in Park Bay, Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu, South India. This fits to its setting. On the Full-Moon Day of Kartika (October-November) the pilgrims perceive the Varuna River as a symbol of Park Bay, Indian Ocean.
