The name itself refers to the meeting of five streams. According to mythology here meet the main currents of the Ganga, Yamuna, Sarasvati, Kirana, and Dhutapapa. The Kashi Khanda (59.119-121) eulogized the merits of this sacred water spot as more powerful that the meeting point of three rivers in Prayaga (Allahabad), and moreover giver of religious merit like that of performing ashvamedha (horse sacrifice). in the month of Karttika bathing here is more meritorious.
