About
Harishchandra Ghat is one of the oldest ghats in Varanasi. It is named after the mythological King Harishchandra, who once worked at the cremation ground here in his unwavering pursuit of truth and charity. It is believed that the gods rewarded him for his resolve, charity, and truthfulness by restoring his lost throne and his dead son to him. Hindus from distant places bring the bodies of their loved ones to Harishchandra Ghat for cremation, as it is believed that a person cremated here attains salvation, or moksha. The ghat was modernised in the late 1980s when an electric crematorium was opened here.
