Kashi is known as Avimukt Kshetra. A person who dies in Kashi attains salvation by the grace of God and is not reborn. Many times scholars have discussed whether Avimukteshwar temple is the main or Vishwanath temple. Avimukteshwar temple has been given great importance in ancient texts. It is mentioned in the ancient mythological texts that worshiping Avimukteshwar Linga gives freedom from the sins and rebirths of many births. It is also believed that Lord Shiva himself worships Prati Avimukteshwar Mahadev daily. Avimukteshwar Linga has been described in Linga Purana, Kashi Khand, Brahmavaivarta Purana. According to historical evidence, Avimukteshwar Linga Temple was a grand temple and Vishweshwar Linga was also located in this premises. Visitors used to get darshan in the same premises. A lot of vandalism was done in the temples during the Mughal period, so at present Avimukteshwar Linga is not located at the place mentioned in Kashi Khand. Many people also consider Putlibai temple as right for Avimukteshwar Linga, such Bramhlin Swami Shivanand Saraswati ji also considered Putlibai temple as right.
