The story related to this in Shiva Purana is as follows:- During the time of Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, when Ravana reached the beach with his army to attack Lanka after the abduction of Sita, he felt thirsty and asked to take water. Before worshiping the dead idol of Lord Shiva, pleased with which Lord Shiva asked him to ask for a boon. On this, Shri Ram sought the boon of victory from Lord Shiva and said that if you are satisfied, then you can purify the world and do good to others. Always stay here to do. Lord Shiva was established there in the form of Jyotirlinga on Shri Ram's saying and he became famous in all the three worlds by the name of Rameshwar.
